An occasional series in which writers speak for themselves.

Former New York Times reporter Walter Thompson-Hernández first encountered an unusual group of Black equestrians in Los Angeles County while researching profiles for the paper. What started as a feature in the Times eventually grew into Thompson-Hernández’s first book, The Compton Cowboys: The New Generation of Cowboys in America's Urban Heartland. He recently discussed the work with WYPL.
