An occasional series in which writers speak for themselves.

The former Rio de Janeiro bureau chief for the New York Times and Newsweek, journalist Larry Rohter lives in both the United States and Brazil. His new work is Into the Amazon: The Life of Cândido Rondon, Trailblazing Explorer, Scientist, Statesman, and Conservationist, which Kirkus calls “a welcome, vivid portrait of a historical figure who deserves much wider recognition outside his native country.” Rohter discussed the book with fellow BIO member Kevin McGruder in the spring.
