Along with being a senior editor at Los Angeles Magazine and a columnist for the Village Voice, RJ Smith is also the author of The One: The Life and Music of James Brown and now Chuck Berry: An American Life. The Wall Street Journal calls the latter an “unsparing but revelatory account of an American original...as smart and punchy as a mono Berry 45.” Smith discussed Chuck Berry with fellow BIO member Kevin McGruder in late April.
