An occasional series in which writers speak for themselves.
Curator and host of the Duke Ellington-themed podcast “Ellington Reflections,” Steven C. Bowie — a now-retired engineer at Northrop Grumman for 40 years — is also the author of Concerto for Cootie: The Life and Times of Cootie Williams. “Bowie does justice to the 1930s Ellington period but really shows his strengths when dealing with Williams’s initially successful big band,” says Jazzwise. “[This is] an excellent addition to the field of jazz biography.” Bowie discussed Concerto for Cootie with fellow BIO member Kevin McGruder in June.
