Children’s Book Roundup: August 2025

The Tour at School! by Katie Clapham (author) and Nadia Shireen (illustrator) (Candlewick). “When you show a New Person around, it’s called giving them The Tour. It’s a really important job and there are lots of things to remember because they don’t know ANYWHERE and you have to tell them about EVERYTHING.” Good thing the young guide is super enthusiastic and eager to show the bewildered new kid every single thing at school — even the secret “EMERGENCY MEET-UP PLACE,” which might be needed before the tour is even over!

On Our Way with Mr. Jay by Chelsea Lin Wallace (author) and Thyra Heder (illustrator) (Neal Porter Books). “Mr. Jay eats jam on bread, then checks his bus from hood to tread. When all is right, he turns the key and rumbles off in School Bus 3. His tank is full. ‘I’m on my way!’ He’ll pick up eighteen kids today.” His route takes him down winding roads, up bumpy lanes, and across blustery stretches, but Mr. Jay makes sure the wild ride is fun and that all the children make it to class safely — and right on time!

Froggy: A Pond Full of Pals! by Paige Walshe (Flying Eye Books). “Somewhere out in the middle of nowhere is a happy, hopping, frog village. Everyone is enjoying their usual activities: eating flies, sitting on lily pads, bobbing in the water, lazing in the mud. Frogs are a gentle, peaceful folk.” Well, the daring Froggy may be as peace-loving as the rest, but he’s itching for adventure! So, his amphibious friends and family help him pack and see him off. The great big world awaits — but what if it’s more intimidating than the tiny green guy expected?
