Children’s Book Roundup: March 2025

The Greedy Wolf by Timothy Knapman (author) and Jean Jullien (illustrator) (Candlewick). “There once was a greedy wolf. He was so greedy that every day he would eat enough food for TEN birthday parties.” But what he really wants to gobble up are those seven delicious-looking young goats! Trouble is, even though he wisely waits until their mommy is away, the wolf can’t get the savvy critters to let him in. And once he finally does sneak inside? He learns that goats just might have their own favorite — and furry — food!

The Bears and the Magic Masks by Joseph Dandurand (author) and Elinor Atkins (illustrator) (Nightwood Editions). The bears live outside the Kwantlen village, and the humans and animals mostly keep their distance. “One day, a master carver from Kwantlen fell into the river…Two young bears swam out to him, and they helped him make it back to his village…” To show his thanks, the carver crafts elaborate animal masks; when they put them on, the bears become those creatures. Learn what happens next in this Indigenous myth retold by an author and illustrator who are themselves members of Canada’s Kwantlen First Nation.

I Am Tree Rex! by Mo Davey (Berbay Publishing). “Rex lived at the edge of a forest with exactly twenty-one trees. Every day, he counted and hugged each one. This always made him feel good until one day…He counted only twenty. A tree was missing!” What could’ve happened? With the help of some loyal birdy buddies, the tiny, tree-loving dinosaur is determined to find out — and to protect the rest of the forest!
