The author of Freedom! Lest We Forget comes to National Harbor on Wed., Sept. 16th, at 7 p.m.!
Join us for an unforgettable evening with Ronnie A. Nichols — acclaimed historian, author, artist, cultural preservationist, and technical advisor for the Academy Award-winning motion picture “Glory” — as we celebrate his groundbreaking new book, Freedom! Lest We Forget.
For more than 45 years, Nichols has devoted his life to recovering and preserving the stories of soldiers of African descent whose courage on and beyond the battlefield helped redefine freedom, citizenship, and democracy in America. In an intimate fireside conversation with Essence editor-at-Large Mikki Taylor, Nichols will take audiences beyond the history books and into the extraordinary lives of formerly enslaved men who became soldiers — men who risked everything to claim a freedom they had been denied and, in doing so, helped change the destiny of a nation.
Drawing from military records, letters, pension files, personal testimony, and rare archival images, Nichols brings these men out of the shadows of history and restores their names, their humanity, their sacrifice, and their heroism to their rightful place in the American story.
