An occasional series in which writers speak for themselves.

Professor, historian, and two-time Pulitzer finalist H.W. Brands is the author of dozens of books, including, most recently, The Zealot and the Emancipator: John Brown, Abraham Lincoln, and the Struggle for American Freedom. The New York Times Book Review says this latest work is “at heart an appraisal of contrasting political designs and personas in prerevolutionary times…This book presents a gripping account of the politics that led to Southern secession, war and the abolition of slavery.”
Brands recently discussed his new book with author/attorney Talmage Boston. Listen to the podcast here. (And read Boston’s thoughts on The Zealot and the Emancipator here.)
